Data Engineer I

As our Data Engineer, you will be working in one of the most complex data warehouse environments and solving complex business challenges. You should be passionate about working with huge data sets and bringing datasets together to answer business questions. You should have extensive expertise in the creation and management of data sets, as well as in implementing and operating stable, scalable data flow solutions from production systems into user-facing applications/reports. These solutions must be fault tolerant, self-healing and adaptive. You will write scalable code and tune performance running over billions of rows of data.

You should be detail-oriented and must have an aptitude for solving unstructured problems. You should be able to work in a self-directed environment, own tasks and drive them to completion.

Responsibilities

• Work with systems engineers and data scientists to design and build an analytics platform and data lake to support compute heavy data science, dashboarding, and web-facing production tooling. (You get to tell us what this should look like!)
• Write ETL to consolidate and relate petabytes of data owned by disparate teams.
• Implement data analytics using cutting-edge analytics patterns and technologies including various standard offerings: EMR, Lambda, Kinesis, and Spectrum.
• Extract huge volumes of structured and unstructured data from various sources (Relational /Non-relational/No-SQL database) and message streams and perform complex analyses.
• Implement data flow solutions that process data on Spark, Redshift and store in Redshift, File Based system (S3) for reporting and ad hoc analysis.
• Implement the best practice data quality assurance mechanisms
• Within the Compute Services organization, you will:
  • Participate in design reviews for new tooling and services.
  • Capture and share best practices with service teams.
  • Teach service team engineers how to test for data quality issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree or a relevant quantitative discipline.
• 2+ years’ development experience in Python or similar scripting language for automation.
• 3+ years’ experience in ETL, data modeling, and data architecture with hundreds of terabytes of data.
• 2+ years’ experience working with core AWS data and analytics services. Good understanding of the applicability, limitations, and trade-offs between a wide set of AWS database and analytics technologies.
• 1+ years’ experience working with distributed computing and associated technologies such as Spark, EMR, etc.
• 2+ years’ experience in Redshift and hands-on experience working with Redshift Spectrum, AWS Glue, DynamoDB, and S3.

Nice to have

• 5+ years’ experience in ETL, data modeling, and data architecture.
• Experience or familiarity with the latest AWS data and analytics tools such as AWS Lake Formation and Sagemaker.
• Expertise in writing and optimizing SQL.
